Reasons why edges are important in photography:
-Edges of a composition can be incorporated into making a stronger image.
-It's an easy idea to play with because there are no hard and fast rules that direct how to use the edges.
-The edges are often ignored, even denigrated as a compositional element.
-Surveying your edges improves your compositions by reminding you to reduce or eliminate distracting details missed when you concentrate on your subject.
-It often seems that the edges of a photo are only considered in relationship to the practical subject
-The edges should not just be the beginning of the nothingness that supposedly exists beyond the moment captured in the frame.
-Edges should be part of the overall composition and create a relationship with what is unseen, beyond the frame.

photo 1-
In the first photo, it is taken from an angle that is taken from down below. The wall in the background filling the picture has 5 windows. At the top of the window there is a figure leaning out of the window, sitting on a wooden plank hanging out of the window also. If i was to remake this photo, i would take at at golden hour so the reflection would bounce off the wall and shadows would be visible. |
photo 2-
The second photo is taken from an downwards angle. There are 5 men sitting there,3 at the back, and two at the front. The men are all wearing hats, covering their faces. There are also couple shadows from the 3 men sitting on the bench behind. If i was to remake this photo, i was take it on a dull day, but bright enough for shadows to be visable. I would also make it more interestibg and not as boring. |
looking up, looking down.
I think this photo of Michael Forrester is the best one. I took this one because it was taken at a down below angle from the floor. I put the flash on the make the background darker and to Michael stand out more in the photo. I layed on the floor and pointed the camera up towards the top of the door where Michael climbed up and sat.

Alexander Rodchenko photography.
The edges in these photos are important because it cuts off the sides of the main photo, trimming it down, forming it into what can be an unusual photo.I like these photos because i like the looks of the patterns in the photos and find them unusual. I also like how he has put them in black and white for a filter which i think makes the darker colours stand out more, giving the photo a subject to focus on.
(14/12/18) Today i tried to re- take some of the photos i took yesterday, to see if i can make different shapes and try and make the photos better if i can. This was what i was able to take:
Edges assessment.
For this task we had to pick 5 pictures we thought were related or similar to each other in some way or other. I chose 5 pictures that had some type of blue material in them. After we chose our photos we had to arange them in different orders.
In todays lesson we had to chose two of our photos to take around the school and take 5 different pictures of each one.
For this task we had to cut out pieces of the 5 photos we chose and design a sculpture with them however we wanted to. I just randomly cut them out into shapes and sizes and created this. I enjoyed making this project it was very difficult though as not everythinh would stay up or stay in the place i wanted it to stay but i improvised and got there.
Photography assessment.
Robert Frank has taken a picture of a few mirrors and written words on them. At the top you can see a hand out in the mirror , dangling an object. At the bottom there is a smaller mirror with another mirror leaning against it, ready goodby's. In the second picture i can see some sort of of brick at the bottom and a cone shaped thing sticking into it and sticking it with a load of bumbs and lumps inside. On top of that is a round circle half pink and brown; to the side there are flowers poking out near to the bottom and a blue cup at the top. Both photos are portrait and have both been taken at the same angle. I think they are unusual because there not common things you could see for a photograph.
These photos are similar in different ways because they are both portrait and also have the same view point as each other. The images both have adges and rectangular shapes in them. I also think they are similar because they are both are unusual in different ways . In the pictures there are loads different edges and jugged edges. The photos relate to edges because in both photos there are a variety of edges. I would ask Frank what was going through his head at the time.
If i was to title the first photo i would name it 'goodbye to my children' as he lost both of his children. Im not too sure what i would call the second one because i think it is a complicated picture to try and work out.
If i was to be inside the first photo i think the surrounding would be very dark, quiet and depressing. However in the second picture the surrounding would be full off colour and the atmosphere would be lively.

Over the week we had had off school, we were set a project to create our own gallery filled with pictures we have taken and invite people to the place where ever you set your gallery up. We we were also told to make a leaflet about the gallery filled with the information regarding our gallery. Including where it is, when it is, what time etc.
This picture is the leaflet/ poster for the gallery of photos. I chose to add a charity in there because then the money that i could earn would go to something that could be helpful in the future.
I put my photos in the back room of my house. I put them so each blind had the same idea. So the first one , was to do with the idea of animals. The second one, different parts of the sky. The third one was a variety of pictures.
This is a really interesting location for your exhibition. I like the way you have used the blind to create a wall and the way you have placed the images. I like the curved lines and natural subjects in your Edges pictures. Well done!
-- Mr Nicholls
You definatley have a eye for pictures involving the sky and the trees and nature. I really like them."
The above photos are the ones i printed out and arranged on the blinds for my gallery. I chose these photos because they all represent significant moments or objects in my life.
Darkroom project.
Over the two weeks I have been In he darkroom making different pictures. We have been using machines that develop different objects that you put on paper and put in the different chemicals so the picture develops.
Edges evaluation.
AO1:
During the time we worked on edges i came up with a variety of different ideas. Some being in the dark room, experimenting with different shapes, objects and pictures. Other ideas being more creative by scrunching things up and taking photos mid-air with an interesting background. I have used loads of different edges in the pictures to round, zigzag, flat, wonkey and crocked. I feel as though my favourite idea so far has been using the projector. I used a picture someone had taken as a background in the projector. I then used aceteate which was coloured purple and gold and covered the light on the projector which made the picture look weird.

When being in the dark room, i used different things on the paper just too see if i could make anything interesting with the shapes or anything unique. i also used paper to colour and shade over other pictures. My favourite experement was when i used other pictures takes, such as the Harley Quin picture and flipping them the other way on the computer so it was an x-ray vision. I tried to improve my work by re-taking designs i had already made to see if i could develop it more and make it more interesting. I used the same objects but moved them around slightly and played around with the light and how long the light was on for.

On the day we had to make our projects i decided to do something completely different from what i first had planned. I decided to do something based on flowers. I printed out 8 pictures of different photos of flowers. I then cut strips out of them and put all the different strips of different pictures side by side in the printer and scanned them. I then used an A3 piece of card and cut out the shape of how the strips were to make it look like it was one big photo, but it was two. I also looked at quotes about flowers on the internet and used the quote. "The earth laughs in flowers." I thought it would add something nice to the card to make something interesting.
